Zohran Mamdani, the 2025 Democratic nominee for New York City Mayor, at a Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, called “seizing the means of production” an “end goal.” While Mamdani’s current platform emphasizes socialist policies—free buses, childcare, rent control, and city-run grocery stores, it avoids explicit calls for state-controlled industries. He has also proposed seizing luxury condos for the homeless. Mamdani has also been linked to statements advocating the abolition of private property. In a 2020 interview with Jacobin on the “Far Left Show” podcast, he expressed support for “de-commodifying housing” and suggested that private property, particularly luxury real estate, should be repurposed for public use to address inequality.
